SPRING ARRIVALS
Spring is finally approaching and
not far behind will be our very welcome group of
summer residents. If you've ever thought about putting
up a nest box for the birds, now is the time.
Bluebirds, wrens and other birds
will benefit. By providing nest boxes, nesting material,
seed and water, you can make your yard come alive
with color and song.
Watch for spring arrivals: red-winged
blackbirds, eastern bluebirds, rose-breasted grosbeaks,
purple martins, swallows, robins, orioles, and everyone's
love; the hummingbird.
Until nature gives way to blooms,
bugs, and berries, feed hi energy food like black
oil sunflower seed which gives birds more energy
per ounce consumed. Cheap mixes full of oats, wheat,
milo and corn by-products are not only low in energy,
they are also the favorites of nuisance, non-native
birds like Starlings and English Sparrows. The Wild
Bird Shoppe's Special Mix contains no fillers.
Check nyjer(thistle) feeders frequently
as the continuous moisture in spring will clog port
holes. Fresh seed is essential to finch feeding.
